Turf Care: Renovation and Repair Procedures Owners Must Know

Having a lawn is about designing a property and increasing its appeal. However, it also requires turf care to make sure turf grasses are at their healthiest and vibrant beauty at all times. This requires homeowners to follow certain repair or renovation procedures to restore lawn’s appeal in case of noticeable problems.

If it’s your first time dealing with turfs, here are some procedures that you might do if damages or problems occurred on your lawns.

Top dressing preparation. Lawn replacement will be necessary if your current turfs experience grave problems that totally affected its look. Top dressing is only necessary in achieving a very smooth surface. This procedure starts by removing the lawn then placing the top dressing soil, which is composed of 20% soil and 80% sand mixture. Place about an inch deep of soil and prepare the surface until leaf presents or cut around 20mm deep in preparation for lawn replacement. The process is quite simple and you can obtain a top dressing soil in stores selling agricultural products.

Patching worn areas. Seeing a worn turf area is a nightmare for property owners, but unavoidable, particularly if there are pets in the property. However, a simple and small worn area can be patched up easily. Examine the worn area and dig the affected site around 40 to 50mm deep. Level the area after digging and lower at around 20mm prior to putting the replacement turf. Since there’s a new turf placed on the affected area, a top dressing soil must be placed for effective application on the joined spaces. Water properly until the replacement turf sets in and becomes established together with the existing turf.

Soil aeration. Aeration is an important process in promoting stronger turf grass roots; reducing soil compaction, enhance fertiliser and water use and uptake, and many more. Experts recommend aerating the soil once a year, if possible, every spring season. Simple ways of aerating the soil is by using fork and drive it vertically on the soil. Rack the ground and maintain 15cm intervals while levering it through 30-degree angle, which will lift the ground.

Check for signs of problems. Inspecting problems on your lawn is crucial before doing any renovation at the lawn. It is best to conduct regular inspections to see the problem right away to prevent the issue from becoming more serious and spread throughout the lawn. Examples of these problems are pests. Numerous pests can live on your lawn and affect its overall appearance. Some pests tend to damage specific grass types like buffalo grass. Common pests found in buffalo turf grasses are sod web-worms and bluegrass bill-bug. If you notice pests on grass, be sure to contact a turf pest expert in your area to solve the problem. On the other hand, you can also eliminate pests on your own by following several guides online.

Renovation and repair are just some of the vital procedures you need to do upon having turfs at your lawn. Call a lawn expert if you are not confident in conducting these procedures if needed.
